The problem is that I have been internet overloaded, mostly from my job. Ironically, I was writing a post on this very topic, but I haven’t even had the energy to finish that.

I do have plans for this blog though, or something like it, though they won’t be put into action until I have a chance to breathe.

See you in August.

Yesterday, I turned twenty.

I didn’t think I would be doing much, as I had no plans made, no one to hang out with. But things turned out more interesting than I had imagined.

The day began with my parents waking me up with presents. From my parents: the children’s books Nicholas by Goscinny and This is New York bu M. Sasek. My brother came through with typically impressive gifts: “The Lost Soundtrack” from The Wizard of Speed and Time, signed to me by John Massari, as well as a CD of John Massari’s music.

Most of the day I spent lounging: talking to B— on the phone and j7 over IM, while reading up on supervolcanoes. Had lunch with parents at Rice, a yummy Thai restaurant.

But the real highlight was dinner. Dinner was a four hour affair at CityZen in the very swanky Madarin Oriental Hotel, where our upstairs neighbor happens to be the pastry chef.

It was one of those rare restaurants where the hostess does not need to look up your reservation in a book, and everyone seems to know you’re expected (and, bonus, that I’m gluten-intolerant). Their suggestion for my food allergy was for me to order whatever I want and they will accommodate. I approved highly.

Our server, Michael, was quite wonderful: attentive, knowledgeable, amiable, and capable of pronouncing everything on the menu. (Michael, if you are reading this, a warm hello and may thanks, again.)

As for the food…well, the only reason I am capable of remembering it all is that Michael brought me a copy of the menu on which to make notes. So lets begin, shall we.

I started off with a yummy rumless mojito (the only mixed drink I have found I like), and noticed that the lack of rum makes the mint stand out more. Hopefully by this time next year, when I’m legal, I’ll be off enough of the antibiotics that I’m able to drink again.

The menus came out, and everything looked delicious. I decided to avoid having to make up my mind and ordered the Chef’s Vegetarian Tasting Menu, which looked like six courses of delicious. My father ordered the carnivorous Chef’s Tasting Menu and Mom and my brother both ordered off of the three course á la carte menu.

First we started off with a couple of amuse bouche:

A tiny salad of sweet cherry tomatoes with tangy micro arugula and a smooth Nicoise Olive Vinagrette. Verdict: Delicious.

A rich olive oil custard with a butter-Espelette and micro-dill topping. I was the only one who could finish it; Mom and Brother thought it was too rich. Verdict: Delicious.

About here I was brought a Happy Birthday card signed by the restaurant staff. It was extremely sweet of them. Then what was actually on the menu started to arrive:

A chilled sorrel soup, which tasted, well, like liquid salad, sharp and slightly spicy. Verdict: Delicious. (are you starting to notice a pattern here?)

Next was grilled green asparagus with micro-greens and a sweet pepper salsa in an espelette vinagrette. I have to find me some of this pepper. It’s mild for a pepper, but still a nice spice with a lot of flavor.

Fifth was the Sweet Onion Chiboust with a Sarawak Pepper Sable and English Thyme Broth. This was very rich and the broth was more of a foam – highly amusing. Also: Delicious.

After that came the Citizen Parmentier. A “Shepard’s pie” sort of concoction, it came in a tiny cast iron pot. It was a fricassée of vegetables with a covering of scalloped potatoes and a roast vegetable jus (which was primarily butter). Also very rich, and also very delicious.

That was the end of the main courses. What I have neglected to mention is how gorgeously everything was presented. Since this was a tasting menu, the portions were all very small (how else do you think I could eat all this?) and arranged on plain white plates that brought out the color and delicacy of the preparation.

I had gotten up at this point and on my way back to the table I stopped to watch the kitchen. Michael explained to me the different stations and we talked about cooking in general and I babbled to him about cooking in ML kitchen.

Then was the cheese course. Michael very kindly wrote down the names of the different ones for me, so I wouldn’t have to worry about mangling the spellings.

First was Chaorce, a French cow’s milk cheese, of a Brie-like consistency but much richer and a touch salty. It paired very well with the espelette-coated almonds that came with the plate. The other cow’s milk cheese was Piave, from Italy. It was hard and sharp, almost a cross between Cheddar and Parmesan. The orange-apricot puree offset it nicely. Next there was another soft cheese, Selles Sur Cher, a goat’s milk cheese from France, it was light and tangy and excellent. I ate this one primarily with the other fruit puree, which was pear. The last cheese was a light sheep’s milk, also from France, Tourmalet, also quite excellent. In fact, they are were all (you guessed it) delicious.

After that was a wine course for the express purpose of drinking to my birthday. Very sweet. Now, I don’t drink alcohol, so I had instead a 2006 Gewürztraminer grape juice from Navarro Vineyards in California, cut with club soda. I know it sounds silly to rave over a grape juice, but it was so good, pretty much like a non-alcoholic dessert wine. The bit of fizz from the club soda certainly didn’t hurt. I might have to get me some of this for special occasions…. Everyone else, of course, had proper dessert wine, and toasted to the beginning of my twenty-first year. Squee.

Then came the sorbet course cleanse the palette. A refreshing lemon-ginger sorbet with a mint geletin. Yummy.

Now, desserts! There were a few of them. First was a silky Cityzen Dreamsicle, a fromage blanc soufflé in an orange sauce that was quite decadent – light and creamy, it melted in my mouth. It came with an adorable slice of candied orange. Heaven.

Next was a very special dessert: roasted Maui pineapple with perles du Japon in a coconut foam. Now normally I don’t like either pineapple or coconut, but this was amazing. My plate also had “Happy Birthday Samantha” calligraphied around it in cocoa syrup. It was very touching. I did take a picture of it for this post, but unfortunately, it did not save.

Then came the actual dessert from the tasting menu, a Meyer lemon soufflé was was light and wonderfully sweet and rich. It came with juniper ice cream which tasted, well, coniferous but was, like everything else in the meal, exquisite, and paired delightfully with the soufflé.

Then, when we thought we had finally reached the end, they brought out a little plate of sweets with the bill: blueberry pates du fruits, which considering pates du fruits are my favorite sweet, I nearly swooned over. I am going to ask our neighbor if she’s willing to teach me how to make them. There were also delicious hazelnut chocolate pralines. There were some leftover, so Michael was kind enough to wrap them up, as well as add a few extra blueberry squares for me.

Sometime past midnight, we staggered back home, completely satisfied, and very full.

So yeah, I very, very highly recommend CityZen (and Michael) for any special occasion. Just don’t expect it to be light on your wallet, to say the least.

Now, dinner!

(In which Herbert has the most awesome summer job ever.)

Today was my first day as the political affairs intern at New Media Strategies. The easiest way to describe it is “overwhelming.” It’s a fast paced place, full of intelligent, enthusiastic people. Today was spent going over benefits, the company, the people I work with, firefox extensions I should use, and blogs I should read. I was also treated to lunch by my mentor and a co-worker, and attended a digital press conference (link forthcoming) by Virginia’s 8th district congressman Jim Moran. Very nifty.

Basically, I am getting paid to spend my days on the blogosphere. And make charts. I am just hoping that spending so much time on the computer doesn’t make my eyes worse than they already are.

As per my title, it makes sense that anything overwhelming would make me feel small, but NMS, especially. Not in the sense of being a tiny cog of a worker. No, NMS emphasizes the importance of every employee, including interns. But in the sense of being conscious of just how small a voice I am in the world, and how big that world has become, sprawled out in a tangle of websites, blogs, and social media, so many voices screaming to be heard.

But it also makes me feel important. Jim Moran, when asked his views on how to deal with with the growing fiscal crisis and debt, he bluntly said that the next generation is getting stuck with that mess. That’s us. That’s me.

I have ears to listen to what everyone else is saying, and eyes to watch the world with. But I also have a voice. It’s a small voice, and not very articulate, but it’s my voice. And I want to use it to change the world.

At NMS they are giving me causes to work with that I feel are good causes. That I can honestly want to add my voice to. And by adding my voice, I am making our chorus a little louder. A little more likely to be heard.

The internet, and it’s capacity for communication is a double-edged sword. It can motivate people, open their eyes, rally them to a cause, to action. But it can also cause fear, paralysis, a sense of overwhelming or futility. By using social media not just to inform, but to engage, you can break that deer-in-the-headlamps paralysis by sparking people think which leads to discussion (or sometimes visca-versa), and more importantly, to . This is a powerful tool. I am incredibly excited to be a part of it.

If you can’t tell, I’m feeling a touch inspired right now.

Vuestar is a company who holds pantents on “ locating web – sites using visual images” which it claims did not exist before the year 2000. (The patents date in 2001 and 2003) See that image on my sidebar that takes you to the 350 Campain? Yeah, that’s a patent violation. And they are sending companies invoices calling for them to pay them anywhere between a couple hundred and millions of dollars in liscencing fees. They plan to take on Microsoft and Google and are “confident” they’ll win,

Hello? Hasn’t this possible at least since HTML was invented in the 90s…I’m sure it was possible before HTML, just not standardized in a few tag markers.

But this tears it. This is probably the single most ridiculous patent I have ever seen. I cannot begin to comprehend why this patent was granted. Have the patent clerks never been on the internet? Whatever happened to prior art?

If you take a look at the website, it primarily exists to tell people that they own the patent. It doesn’t say how they “invented” the “techology” or what it’s specifications are. The patent specifications can be found here, but I found them equally vague and absurd. It doesn’t explain how this is novel at all. Basically they are claiming because they are the first to patent they invented it. Heck the Singapore Government Website used this “technology” before the patent was granted! Anyone else see an issue with this?

Oh, and I sent them an e-mail asking what they thought of image-linking prior to 2000. I bet you ten-to-one they’ll never reply.

And people wonder why I advocate patent reform….

This was an e-mail from my father. I live not far from where J Street should be, and am glad to have another theory on the matter. Google gives the original source as the DC Almanac

MICHAEL FELDMAN’S Whad’ya Know may have solved a major local mystery: why DC doesn’t have a Jay Street. The guest was an author who had written about the history of letters and he pointed out that Noah Webster in 1828 was the first person to publish a dictionary with all 26 letters of the alphabet in it. The letter J was one of those that were frequently missing. Noah Webster came along several decades after Washington was laid out.

WIKIPEDIA – The letter J is the tenth of the Latin alphabet; it was the last to be added to that alphabet. . . . Only about .06% of letters in English, .22% in Spanish, and .29% in French on average are Js. It is the 24th-most frequent letter in English, the 23rd-most frequent in Spanish, and the 21st-most frequent in French. . . Some believe that Petrus Ramus (d. 1572) was the first to make a distinction between I and J. The differentiation was probably made first in Spanish though, where, from the very introduction of printing, we see j used for the consonant, and i only for the vowel. For the capitals, I had at first to stand for both (as it still does in German type, and in all varieties of Gothic or Black Letter); but before 1600 a capital J consonant began to appear in Spanish. . .

In England, individual attempts to differentiate i and j were made already in the 16th century, as by Richard Day, who printed books in London after 1578, and George Bishop, who printed the translation of La Primaudaye’s French Academie in 1586, with i, j, u, v, differentiated as in modern use, but had no capital J or U. The J j types are not used in the Bible of 1611, nor in the text of the Shakespeare Folio of 1623; these have I i for both values; but the latter has a capital Italic J in headlines in the proper names ohn, uliet, ulius, and in the colophon, list of actors, etc., thus showing a tendency to use this (in its origin merely an ornamental variety of I) as a J. . . .

But though the differentiation of I and J, in form and value, was thus completed before 1640, the feeling that they were, notwithstanding, merely forms of the same letter continued for many generations. . . In dictionaries, the I and J words continued to be intermingled in one series down to the 19th century. Dr. Johnson, indeed, under the letter I, says “I is in English considered both as a vowel and consonant; though, since the vowel and consonant differ in their form as well as sound, they may be more properly accounted two letters”. . . .

SO FORGET ABOUT the Pierre L’Enfant hating John Jay myth; it’s more J was just a letter too few people knew or cared about.

if you visit American cities,
you will find them very pretty.
Only two things you must be aware:
Don’t drink the water and don’t breathe the air.
-Tom Lehrer

Recently there’s been a large hulaballoo about this report on contaminants in our tap water. I was neither surprised nor outraged to hear about this. What did surprise me however, was how much everybody acted as if they didn’t know about it. We live in a closed system; it only makes sense that what we put into the water is going to end up coming out of our faucets.

But really, I don’t think this is such a big deal, at least not for humans. It’s not cholera or giardia or dysentery. In the developed world, we’re doing pretty good regarding those nasty things. So in that sense, I think we’re doing a pretty good job. The water we drink is much less contaminated than it used to be. Heck, it’s clear – that’s an improvement than a century ago when the water could be so cloudy that Ivory Soap was invented to float so you wouldn’t have trouble finding it at the bottom of your bathtub.

What we put into our own systems doesn’t bother me so much. Even with all the lead, the asbestos, the drugs, and all the other toxins the media is always trumpeting about, the human lifespan is has increased amazingly, and is still improving. I mean, I suspect what we are so alarmed about finding in our system has been there for a lot longer than we think, it’s just that we didn’t have the technology to see it, since the concentration is so dilute.

It’s the media’s fault, really. When they get bored reporting on war, famine, recession, and whatever other flavor of doom of the day, contamination makes a pretty good choice. People are scared. They are careless of what what they put into the system but paranoid about what they put into themselves (excepting fats and empty calories). And shock tactics work well for holding an audience.

No, what bothers me is what we’re putting into the system of the rest of the world. Killing off animals with toxic waste, choking our air with smoke, and our water with oil. Contaminating pure strains of crops with GMO DNA, rendering it inedible. If only humans were affected by what we do, it wouldn’t bother me so much. Not that that means I don’t think we shouldn’t stop killing ourselves slowly, but rather that I think it’s just as important that we realize that we’re not the only ones here. If we were, well, we wouldn’t be here for much longer. We need to respect this planet and everything else that lives on it. It is a matter of our very survival.

I’ve always found it ironic that human are supposed to be the most evolutionarily advanced species on the planet, and yet, we seem to be the ones with a poorly developed survival instinct.

In a way, I suppose I should be grateful for our nation’s contaminationphobia. Since it’s finally getting people to stop and think that maybe they don’t want to let industry to put all those toxic chemicals into our waterstream and that maybe waste output should be regulated closer. It would be about time.

There are a few things I am addicted to: chocolate, my boyfriend, vinegar (especially salt and vinegar potato chips), chocolate, hats, and the most recent addiction to this list: RSS feeds.

There was a time, not too long ago, where I refused to read the newspaper, excepting the morning comics. It was just too depressing. This lasted most of the way through high school. During that same period I also gained regular access to the internet, but I spent most of my time on Instant Messenger, message boards, and research sites. News was not my top priority.

Then I went to college. People say that college is a bubble from the outside world. But I’ve found Swarthmore to be much the opposite. People read the news (free copies of the New York Times proliferate the campus), people talk about the news, people care about the news. Granted, the news people care about might be specific to their interests, but it’s difficult not to be friends with a significant crosssection. So I started reading the news, just a little bit here and there. Then I discovered a little Mac application called Shrook. All of a sudden, I didn’t have to keep a bookmark folder of scores of links to check every day. I could get my computer to do it for me. This would prove to be my downfall.

When I checked links manually, I only had a couple dozen; usually those that I knew updated on a daily or otherwise regular basis. But with an RSS reader, I didn’t have to worry about that. I could subscribe to as many as I’d like. Soon I had over a hundred feeds with several hundred posts a day. This started to become a problem- I use multiple computers – my MacBook, my XO (now running XFCE), my work station, and the terminals at school. But if I checked a site anywhere else buy from my macbook, I would have to go through the articles again when I opened my feed reader. So after a few different tries, with Apple Mail, Vienna, and Endo, I gave up.

But then, about a week ago, I finally gave in to Google Reader. And I admit, I am a convert. I can have my feeds anywhere, and not have to worry about seeing the same posts (except cross-posts) multiple times. It’s quite wonderful. So now I am back to reading 120 feeds and upwards of 700 posts a day (and growing). Yes, it takes up a lot of my time, but I think it’s worth it.

The question is now, while I have this information, what will I do with it? Write about some of it, hopefully. As for larger actions; it remains to be seen. I still have very low energy. And a low Brilliant Idea & Implementation Quotient. Hopefully those will both improve one of these days. As mentioned earlier, I have felt the energy, the need to Do Something, I’m just not sure what yet.

Also, I have learned that I can post my daily de.icio.us (another service of which I am late to jump on the bandwagon of, but have done so for the same reasons as switching to Google Reader) links automatically to my blog. Which I will be doing, so you will be seeing a small snippet of of what I am reading. And if it turns out my notes are posted with them, I will start writing more commentary.

Santander gets an immediate plus in my book for being of the few companies (El Rey is another – Venezualen) that is based in the country of origin. It also is fair trade, small farmer, and kosher.

It has an extremely smooth flavor and mouthfeel, and is not at all bitter. It is one of the most flavorful chocolates I have eaten, complex, with strong fruity undertones, criollo without a doubt.. The cacao nibs give it a subtle bitter crunch, which is a nice contrast to the smoothness of the chocolate itself. This is chocolat meant to be eaten slowly, nibbled and savoured.

Even the packaging is elegant – dark red with light yellow lettering and two theobroma cacao beans in the upper right corner. It’s packaged in foil in a box, making it easy to save for later – if you

I eagerly give this bar my highest approval.

This bar, like many, was provided by my boyfriend, who is, as ever, a strong facilitator of my addiction. (At least since he’s moved within easy walking distance of a gormet grocery store with an outstanding selection of chocolate.) You can see why I love him.
